Don’t forget your weapon’s second enchantment slot

Date March 6, 2008

That’ right, your weapon has two “enchantment” slots.

I’m crazy, right?

Well, I was doing a bit of research on Wowhead for temporary enhancements, and came across the Adamantite Sharpening Stone.  You can see it adds 12 weapon damage (to a sharp weapon) and 14 melee critical strike rating.

But what’s this second enchantment slot you’re talking about Amanna?  Well, I knew the weapon damage buff doesn’t benefit us in feral forms, but I was wondering about the melee critical strike rating, so I checked out comments.  I didn’t find anything on that stat, but I found an interesting way of describing weapon buffs:

“It’s important to note that each weapon has 2 slots, with potential others with JC slots. It has a permanent enchantment-slot, basically any enchantment an enchanter can do on your weapon as well as some other items.  A Temporary enchantment-slot, all oils (alchemical or enchanting) poisons (rogue only) sharpening stones (such as this) and shaman enhancement spells (windfury etc.) count as this, adding a new one overrides the old one.”

Interesting stuff, but still doesn’t answer my question.  So I headed over the Emmerald’s Druid Forums, and what do you know?!?  Sure enough there is a post on this topic

Since us Druids tend to use Staves or Maces we will most like be looking at Adamantite Weightstone, giving us +14 critical hit rating.  The post also mentions Elemental Sharpening Stone, which gives +28 critical strike rating to a weapon for one hour, which is even better.

One of the post replies also mentions something about “this is the best we ferals can do until 2.4″.  I’ve searched Wowhead for new and changed temporary item enhancements and I can’t find any weapon enhancements better than the Elemental Sharpening Stone.  Anyone have an idea what the poster might have been referring to?

Anway - just thought I’d write this one up real quick.  We (I) get so focused on our gear and enchantements, that we (again, I) sometimes forget about the smaller ways to buff up like food, gems and now temporary enhancements.

I think the poster was commenting on the fact that until 2.4 we don’t gain the benefit from the +dmg on the stones, though we currently get the advantage of the crit rating.

Read the 2.4 patch notes a little closer:

Weightstones and Sharpening Stones: The bonus damage from these temporary enchantments now works while shapeshifted.

So, Adamantite Weightstones will add 14 crit rating AND +12 weapon damage (which, with our 1.0 attack speed is 12DPS) overall its about a 20 DPS buff for the low cost of one bar and two cloth.

Great thanks for the comments. I typically DON’T read patch notes. And the few times I do, they certainly aren’t read carefully - so my bad.

    Great little buff then.
